Start with the Command Word
Underline the instruction: identify, describe, explain, compare, calculate or evaluate. An identification may need a short fact, while an explanation needs a connected reason. A comparison should make the relationship clear rather than writing two unrelated descriptions.
Use the Context in the Question
If a question describes a school network, online shop or embedded system, refer to that situation. Generic facts may be correct but fail to show why they matter in the scenario. Ask: what detail has the examiner included, and which part of my answer should use it?
Be Precise with Technical Language
Computer Science contains related terms that are not interchangeable. Memory and storage, validation and verification, or authentication and authorisation describe different ideas. Build short definitions in plain English, then practise applying them.
Match the Depth to the Marks
The mark allocation is a useful guide, not a word count. A one-mark item normally needs one clear point. A longer response needs developed reasoning and may require more than one side of an argument. Avoid repeating the same idea in different words.
Review Errors by Cause
When marking practice, label mistakes: missing knowledge, vague terminology, weak application, calculation error or misread question. This makes the next revision task specific. Simply recording the total mark does not reveal what to improve.
Develop Explanations, Not Lists
When a question asks why something happens, connect the point to its consequence. For example, saying that encryption “keeps data safe” is too vague. A clearer explanation identifies that readable plaintext is transformed into ciphertext, so an unauthorised person without the key cannot easily interpret intercepted data.
The aim is not to write more. It is to make the relationship between cause and effect explicit.
Plan Longer Responses Briefly
Before writing an extended answer, note two or three distinct points and any context that must be applied. This takes less time than restarting a paragraph halfway through. When evaluation is required, consider benefits, limitations and the specific needs in the scenario before reaching a supported judgement.
Use Time and Checking Productively
If a student is stuck, they should mark the question, move on and return later. At the end, checking should be targeted: units on calculations, binary place values, command words, unanswered sub-parts and whether longer answers use the context.
A Parent-Friendly Progress Check
Instead of asking only for a mark, ask which type of question improved and which error category appears most often. A rising score is encouraging, but a clearer diagnosis is more useful for planning the next week.
